Gillian is a certified Master Black Belt and has trained and coached hundreds of people in a number of continuous improvement techniques, including Lean Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma, across Europe and North America.
She was first certified as a Black Belt by Motorola, in Scotland, in 2001, where she spent 8 years as a Continuous Improvement Leader in the semiconductor and the mobile phone manufacturing divisions. While at Motorola, she led several successful large (>£1M) Lean Six Sigma projects, both locally and worldwide.
On leaving Motorola, Gillian was a co-founder of Six Sigma Scotland and worked as a Master Black Belt for Rath and Strong management consultants, Smallpeice Enterprises Ltd and 100% Effective Training Ltd. One of her consulting assignments included 5 years as a Programme Leader for an in-company Lean Six Sigma deployment in a major high-street bank – she developed and delivered customised training programmes, facilitated project selection workshops and provided follow-up project coaching and support to candidates at all organisational levels. She worked with teams from many divisions within the bank, including Retail, Group Risk, Purchasing and Group Technology
Gillian also spent 7 years working as a Design for Six Sigma Master Black Belt in SKF, a global bearing design and manufacturing company. As a member of SKF’s global Six Sigma Core Team, she trained and coached project teams, customers, sub-contract manufacturers and management across SKF worldwide to embed the Design for Six Sigma tools into the product design and development process for complex bearing condition monitoring systems. A major success was the reduction of first-year warranty returns from 4% down to 1%. The success of this project can be attributed to influencing and engaging people throughout the organisation using a wide range of Design for Six Sigma tools such as Change Management, Quality Function Deployment, Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and statistical tools such as Measurement Systems Analysis, Design of Experiments and Accelerated Life Testing.
Gillian was also accredited as an Agile Scrum Master while at SKF, with a particular interest in the integration of Design for Six Sigma tools into the Agile product development process.
Gillian has a BSc (Hons) in Physics, from Glasgow University.
